Easton Nights, Valley Days – Photographs by Peter Ydeen, January 13 – March 23
Easton Nights (Main Gallery) is a story which grew from our unique and uncommon valley in where the Easton lies, and is told with images of the unpeopled landscapes taken at night. Here, in the small hours, the world we see as mundane cascades into dream. Like a surreal scene from a Guilermo del Toro film: trash bins and Toyotas, stop signs and doorways; all become animated. They lean, they stretch, and emanate with umbrageous hues, which seem to exhale from the nights own personal color wheel. Scattered signs give words, marking our place in time, while the geometries show our relentless effort to organize our world in a box. These are our stages, with the houses our beehives, and the doors our portals. Complete they are a mimesis of our daily life, as can only be shown in the often mystical emptiness of night. Then with the dawn, comes the beginning, where we all wake, then act; all while these magical and romantic worlds return to sleep.
Valley Days (Gallery Annex) is a series of urban landscape photographs taken in the Lehigh Valley by local photographer Peter Ydeen. With its unique small town character and long varied history, our valley is presented through shapes, colors and arrangements. The series usese the tenets of Urban Landscape Photography, finding the often subtle and unnoticed beauty normally perceived as mundane. The backyards and parking lots, work places and signage, all reflect the intricate and colorful stages, which we create for our worlds, but rarely notice. With its’ playful, lyrical and chimerical overtones, Valley Days reveals the optimistic light in our daily life.
About The Gallery
The Easton Hospital Gallery and Gallery Annex are programmed by the State Theatre Center for the Arts, in partnership with the Arts Community of Easton. ACE creates opportunities which invite community involvement, and presents educational opportunities by organizing exhibitions, classes and workshops, an annual studio tour, and public mural projects. ACE also initiates and participates in area activities which enrich the artistic life of the community, working with the community, and undeserved groups identified by local agencies. ACE recognizes that a thriving community of artists is essential to accomplishing these goals, thus fosters artists in education and professional development and provides a venue for communication with peers, schools, arts organizations, and local government.
